student loan

Professional full time working mom will have nothing if I make the "real" payments on my student loan

So I'm still trying to work out how a family of three, with only one person working is going to come up with the income based 600 dollar payment for my student loan. Things are so tough in Cali that we had to go bankrupt last year, and if I make these payments I will not be able to eat! It's crazy that a speech therapist who has worked for so many years in a deprived school, in a poor area of town is going to be so broke herself! I missed the cut-off for the teacher loan forgiveness as I started work one year before the program started. All I want to do IS to play my loan but not at the huge payment they have planned.... has anyone else paid what they could afford on their student loan without getting wages garnished??

Hi my name is Charlene Dickie and I am a single parent and when i was 19 I took a loan out to pay for a student loan because I went to compu college I graduated with office administration but never graduated with what I wanted which was executive office administration because I ended up getting pregrant plus I had a boyfriend at home at the time that was very jealous so I had a hard time to study he was always making fun of me or hitting me and I was pregnant pretty bad eh.  I stayed with him for a year then decided to leave him and now he has not ^paid me one cent for child support for my daughter and I am having a hard time paying bills off let alone a student loan, plus he took my bank card and did fraud with it and I did not even know until I went to the bank one day and tried to use my card and it said go see someone inside at the countetr so I looked at my boyfriend and asked him what he did he said nothing si I went inside and found out that he frauded the bank for 3500.00 so I had to change banks and i have not been able to pay it off because it is just me and my daughter .  So now because of my credit I can not get a house or a credit card or over draft anything because of one man that I went out with.  If you can help me please that would be great I cry every night hoping that my life will get better and that eventuaaly I will be able to pay that off but I know I wonèt be able to.

I owe almost $40,000 in student loans, and they will not let me postpone. My husband was recently laid off, and we cannot afford the $260 a month, plus the $400 we have to pay to keep our health insurance. My husband is diabetic and we pay ad additional $200 for meds. I have a 3 year old daughter, I just want this gone!! I know I went into the loan willingly, but I was 17 when I signed up, and no one told me the tremendous debt, I am 40 and still owe all this!! I don't know what to do, I am sick of worrying.

About to turn 38, single, no kids and am trying to purchase my 1st home. Problem is that they say I make too much- funny for some reason what everyone sees on paper is double what I bring home after paying my student loan, car payment, rent and bills- I have zero credit cards. I decided to better myself by going to college to teach and now that debt will be with me for life. Due to the fact that "they" say because I am single with no dependents, my income is too high- I am not eligible for any assistance. In summary, I need help- I have $6000 left on my car and way too much left on the student loan- if I could clear the lesser of 2 evils, I would be able to get by and start saving. Any suggestions?

Hello! I have to admit, I'm doing better than some people on here that I've read about, I'm not going to make up some kind of sad sob story, I'm just going to tell you like it is.  What I need to do is to pay off 4 bills. I'm married, 16 years now, and I can't say that my husband is abusive or anything along that line.  We, especially me, have been VERY unhappy for about 6 years now. We have a 10 year old son, and a 21 yr old daughter from my first marriage that my husband took in as his own, to this day, and has made him a grandpa.  My problem is that I'm at the point that I'm so unhappy, depressed, (I do actually have medical problems such as these) and I need to be able to leave my husband and start my life over again.  There is no communication anymore, and we have known for years that we shouldn't be together.  It's really a financial thing that makes us stay together, and of course, our son.  We have 4 bills (besides a mortgage, which is in his name, and I just dont think that's the most important part right now to deal with), all of them are because of me, and only one of them is in his name.  I can't, though, just leave him stuck with the two bills that I've caused. I don't feel right doing that.  At the bare minimum, I really would need to pay off the one loan in his name, which is approximately $3,500, and a military credit card (he is retired air force, 23 years, been retired 3 years now) with a balance of $4000.00.  The other two, one is a credit card in my name only, for right about $3900, and a school loan of $7,000 that I've been paying on as much as I can for 20 years. Yes, 20 years!  My credit is terrible because of this. I wouldnt' be able to live on my own and pay these bills, dont have the credit for an apartment, so I'm stuck living where I am.  I am an LPN, which I've worked at some small office jobs here and there, though I've had my certificate since 2001. I HATE nursing, but, once I move out, that's what I'm going to have to do.  Where we live now, there are NO nursing jobs, we live in a very small town, and my husband is a contractor for the Army, so we can't just get up and move to a place where there would be work for me.  We actually started taking in foster children just over a year ago, something we wanted to really do, but also, there's the benefit of my being able to be home (because there is no work), and still get some kind of income.  It seems though that we can't get any foster children that end up staying for more than a month or two because of various reasons.  There isn't family to rely on financially, we have already had one bankruptcy.  The whole point is that I HAVE to leave. I can't live the rest of my life being as unhappy as I am(it goes pretty deep). But, because I'm unable to take care of myself (and my son if he chooses to come with me) money wise, and the fact that feel it would be really wrong to leave my husband with these 2 bills that are in his name, I have no choice but to stay where I'm at.  I need to pay off these bills, make sure my credit report is cleared up, and have just enough money to move on. I already know where I want to go, and there's a great chance that I'll already have a place to live, not to mention the job market for nursing is great.  ANY help paying these bills would be so fantastic.  I did manage to pay off one bill that was in my name, just this past October, so yes, I have been trying it on my own.  I just don't have the 2, 3 or 4 years to play with that it would take for me to pay these bills off.  My story sounds petty compared to some, but I just can't stay in a marriage where there is no love, communication, nothing. Ideally, I would love to be able to do this in about 6 months, though I know it could take upwards of a year, or probably 2-3 doing it on my own. Please consider helping me in any way, any amount possible.  Debt consolidation and another bankruptcy are not options anymore.  Any funds would go straight to bills, and this would be because I would prefer money orders already filled out to the companies that need paid (so you know I'm not getting the money).  Larger amounts of money, if I'm lucky enough to get that, I'm not sure how to go about getting it straight to the company besides sending it myself.  Right now, even amounts of a few hundred dollars is going to make a huge difference. Thank you so much for listening to my story, and if you're one of those that is lucky enough to help someone, whether its me or not, thank you.

Hi. My name is Patti and I am 45 yrs old. My husband and I have been married for almost 25 yrs and we've raised 2 great kids. We originally lived in central California all our lives until 2005 when we moved to Austin Texas. The house we were renting in California was owned by a church and we lived there for 5 yrs until they told us that they were tearing it down to make more parking lot. My husband was a commercial truck driver and I worked part time at an elementary school. We were making fairly decent money but the housing/rental market in CA grew increasingly expensive and we simply couldn't afford anything anymore. My husband started doing web searches for driving jobs across the country and landed a great job with a company out of Austin TX. In fact, he landed the job over the phone! Within 2 months we had sold both our cars and were heading to Texas with our then 15 year old son. Shortly after moving here I went back to school after 25 yrs and became a certified medical assistant. But my husband's company dried up along with a lot of other trucking jobs. Soon after graduating my school my health began to decline rapidly and I was diagnosed with rheumatiod arthritis and have very limited mobility. I have been fighting to get my disability now for nearly 18 months. My husband finally got a job with a private contractor washing city buses but became injured on the job which resulted in a hernia and his boss refused to pay for it under workers comp. Seems in the state of Texas that an employer is NOT required to carry comp on their employees. He had to pay for surgery himself (monthly payments are thru the roof not including my medical bills or my student loan) and he was off work for 2 weeks. The Dr actually wanted him home for 6-8 weeks but we simply couldn't afford that. Then his boss decided to start paying everyone only once a month! We went almost 5 and a half weeks without a paycheck. My husband is now working for another company but only making 11.50 an hour. We have no car so he rides a bicycle to work...13 miles one way...and he's 48 yrs old now. Our 19 year old son lives with us and has had learning disabilities since he was 4...so now he is trying to get his GED so he can get a job. I'm not asking for a lot...just enough to get a month ahead. After paying rent, utilities, student loans and medical bills, and food...we have approx. $23 to last 2 weeks. Any help is appreciated. phardin64@yahoo.com

Hello,

My name is Jennifer and I am currently attending Columbia State Community College in Middle Tn. I am going for public relations and a minor in sociology. My first semester was at MTSU and honestly, I did not do very well. However after the past 2 years my determination to make it through school and make a difference in today's world has grown tremendously. I believe with all of my heart that I will make a difference in today's world. The problem is that I have almost 17,000 dollars worth of private student loans and with todays economy I can not afford to make the monthly payments. Also the loan company will not consolidate my loans. I am just now starting my Sophomore year. I realize I have been very irresponsible when it comes to school, but I need help.

I am a very hard worker, and I excel at almost everything I do. If there is someone out there that would  be willing to help me take care of these student loans I would be more than greatful.

Asking for help is a hard thing to do, especially when you are asking complete strangers. However, my parents can not help me and I can not seem to help myself. I know that there are people out there that are looking to make a difference in someone's life, and I am one of the many people in America that needs some help right now.

If you are looking to make a difference in someone's life and you might be considering me Please email me at jenjlk1202@gmail.com. I would be happy to tell you more about myself and my aspirations.

In my life I have made bad choices which can be said about majority of Americans. If I knew what I know now things would be very different. I currently owe on my student loans which at the time didn't realized how valueable it was to stay in school, currently owe 20,000. Right now I work not even consider part-time more like peak time. Three days out the week from 9am till 1pm., and wish to work more hours. I live with my grandmother who has raised me all my 30 years, and she had a stroke over the summer. My relationship with my mother is okay not the best, but we share a car which is hers. Doing things to such as pick her up for work and then going to get ready for my small job is so much on me plus caring for my grandmother. I really want to work full time, but find it hard when I am pulled like a string.

Hi

I'm an international student from Slovakia. My school will not work with anyone but FAFSA for a student loan. However, FAFSA wont work with international students. I have someone willing to co-sign on a student loan, but now i cant even find a private loan that will accept me even with an American co-signer. I've read quite a few horror stories about private loans too. Is there anyone out there that can point me in the right direction? I'd be eternally grateful!

I am a 100% disabled veteran. I am not able to work and my student loans have gone into default.  They have just dropped from my credit report, and I have been told not to make a payment, because that will put it back on my credit report.

I was going to buy a place to live and stop paying rent using my VA Home Loan, but they say I cant use that untill I pay off my student loans. If I bought, insted of rent, I would save $200 a month and could start paying on the stundent loans.

Any advice will help.

STUDENT LOAN HELP!  I teach in a low-income community and have $60,000 of loan debt.   I can't find any programs/grants to help.  There is a loan forgiveness act through the dept. of ed. but doesn't apply to me because I had loans before the act began.  Is there anything I can do?  A teacher salary isn't enough to cover the loan...unless I pay it for it for 20 years after I am dead!

HELP!

Feel free to participate in this public group space.

Two easy ways to do this:

  1. Add a comment or a question here - on this page... or on any other page in this space.
  2. Or, if you want to start a separate thread - make a new page.

Either way is good - the important thing is your participation. On Aidpage, people support each other by speaking out and by paying attention to each other - as simple as that.
